Chalkboard Signs

We had a client special order five large chalkboard signs. They needed four 25"x8" and one 40"x8. I drew up two different shapes and sent them to them for review. This is the shape they liked.

We had some pine boards cut to size at Home Depot, traced the template onto them and cut the shape out with the band saw. We filled the knots and dents with wood filler and sanded them flat once they were dry.

I have stained bare wood with success in the past but I was curious to see if a wood conditioner would make a difference. I have heard it prevents blotches so I purchased Minwax Pre-Stain to see if it was worth the extra step.

I applied it with a brush and allowed it to penetrate for 10 minutes. (The directions suggest 5-15 minutes) If there is any excess you are directed to remove it with a dry cloth, but it had soaked in really well.

Next, I applied Minwax Wood Finish stain in Jacobean. I also applied the stain to the concrete floor as the can flipped over and spilled all over the place! Fun times!!

I almost had to buy a second can of stain as I was running out but I was able to salvage some from the concrete spill. I applied two coats of stain. This picture was taken after one coat, and the one below that, is after the second coat.

I taped off the area that wasn't supposed to get paint. I applied three coats of magnetic spray paint and two coats of Valspar chalkboard paint.

They came out beautiful! My client is very happy with them and has promised to send us pictures of them hanging in the gazebo. I thought the wood conditioner was worth the extra step! It gave the wood a softer, richer look. It was also my first time using magnetic paint and I have to say, I think its a waste. Once the chalkboard paint was painted over it, it was not magnetic. Maybe it works better after 50 coats are applied but who wants to do that? Not me. We will not be offering these chalkboard signs in our Etsy shop but that doesn't mean you cant still special order one. Have a good day!

Cork Board

Hi friends! Today I'm putting the last coat of Polly on the desk a client had me build. I cant wait to call that project DONE! Ill post about that soon. In the mean time, the same client requested a large 16x20 cork board to go above her desk. This thing was a challenge! My father spent 11 long hours on it. I had the easy job of painting it and wont tell you how long it took me. Lets just say, my poor pop got the short end of the stick. Here is his work in progress.

After some bright red paint and stencils added to the cork, we have this beauty...

I love it, my client loves it! It makes you almost not want to use push pins in it. I don't think this will be something we offer in the Etsy shop. It was just too difficult to make, but you can bet that we will make it again if we get a custom order for it.

And I end with a big "thanks" to my dad for being so awesome! Has anyone made a DIY cork board? There are so many ways to do it. I would love to hear how yours turned out.  Have a great week everyone!

Arrow Picture Frames

Hey friends, happy Wednesday to you! I have finished my Arrow frames and wanted to share them. Out of the four styles of frames, they are the easiest to make but they have taken me weeks to finish. When I finish painting my frames I always spray on a top coat. This happens outside so the fumes are not in my house. I leave them outside to dry for a few hours. When I went to bring them in I found that my dogs had knocked them over and scratched them up. So I had to start over!

I really need a paint booth! Ive been researching how I can make one. I have some good ideas so we are going to be finishing the drywall in the garage and making me a paint booth to complete my work space.

I purchased some washi tape for the first time (I know, I'm always the last one to try new stuff) and wanted to incorporate it into my frames. Its my new favorite thing and I'm sure I'll be using it on my frames again.

The 4x6

The 5x7

The 8x10

These frames can be purchased in my Etsy Shop. Have you had a chance to do a washi tape project yet? Does anyone own a painters booth? I would love to hear where you get your painting projects done?

Lightning Picture Frames

It's almost Friday! Just a little while longer and it will be the weekend. What do you guys have planed? My weekend will be busy with a trip to Lowe's for the supplies I need to build a closet desk for a client. You can count on me posting about that project! I will also be making an Ikea run. I really wish we had one closer than San Diego. And then there is Super Bowel Sunday. I cant promise that I will watch the game but I will definitely be in front of the TV stuffing my face and chatting. Not at the same time of course.

I have finished three more frames and wanted to share them. This is the "Lightning" style frame, which is the most complicated frame to make out of the four styles. Hence the higher price.

The 4x6

The 5x7

The 8x10

I went a little moodier with the colors than the first set. I also went with the gold stripes sense gold is making a huge comeback lately. You can find all three in my Etsy Shop.  So what do you guys think? Any special colors or designs you would like to see? Enjoy your day!

Scallop Picture Frames

Hi guys! Sorry I have been MIA. I have been busy working on my frames in an attempt to finally open my Etsy Shop. Kind of silly to have a Facebook/Blog about Frame Candy when I have no frames finished. So that is changing. I wanted to share three frames that I finished yesterday. I have been working on them a while (as in days) I was having a hard time finding a protecting glaze that I liked. But Michael's came to my rescue when Lowe's and Home Depot let me down. So here they are...

The yellow 4x6

The blue 5x7

 The white 8x10

All three can be purchased in my Etsy Shop. Don't forget, I also take custom orders. Have a wonderful day! I'm off to finish the other six frames I'm working on.
