Guest/ Nieces Room

So sorry, I've been having more computer issues but I think I have them fixed now. I know, I said that last time!

I have been waiting to post more rooms for my house tour because I have not finished them. But then I got real and asked myself "self, will they ever really be finished?" and the answer is no way! Even if by some miracle I finish each room to my satisfaction I will most likely grow tired of it and change it again. So I give you my guest/nieces room, raw and uncut.

This room got a coat of Glidden Pebble Grey along with a faux painted headboard out of Glidden Rich Navy. Bedding from West Elm and thrift store finds make this room feel eclectic, woodland and soft all rolled into one.

I have been on the look out for a ruffled table cloth. Kind of like this or this. So far they don't exist. I might have to make one. Its time to make-up with my sewing machine. I spray painted this lamp navy and the thrift store Frame white. The "B" art is something my nieces dad made her. The little log cabin stores her bracelets.

I love the texture of this pillow. My sister in law gave it to me forever ago. She doesn't remember where she got it or that she gave it to me! Haha, I said it was a long time ago.

Look at all the dirt on those walls. Ewww

Much better! This frame wall is full of thrift store finds and DIY art. The only thing that is not, is the deer hook that is from Marshalls. If you want more details on this gallery wall you can find it HERE

Read about this DIY jewelry holder HERE

I found this desk at a thrift store. I think I paid $40.00 for it. I had plans to paint it a fun yellow or white but my niece asked me not to. I guess she likes it as it is. I still might have to get my brush on it one day. The stool is a Ross find.

I also had plans to paint the frames on this wall. Maybe one day Ill get to that. But then again the eclectic feel of them is growing on me. Everything you see in this space is from a thrift store except the polka dot cork board, that was from Target and the clear plastic "B" was a gift for my niece from my in-laws.

Here are a few close ups.

This room is my favorite! Light flows in here all day making the room feel so soft and lovely.

Read about this DIY art HERE. The owl is from Ross and the antique bottles were my Grandmothers.

I inherited this side table (I spray painted navy) and Ikea chair from a previous roommate. Phew, so glad those days are behind us. Haha! I guess having roommates isn't that bad, but there is something about NOT sharing your home that is priceless!

This pillow is from Target. When I bought it, it was on clearance online but I saw them back in the store the other day.

Thrift store lamp with a new shade from Target.

How cute is this box!! My good friend gave me her Grandmothers sewing box. It was a faded off-white color so I gave it new life with this blue. I never knew her Grandmother but it is filled with her sewing items and is a gift I will always cherish.

The Pie Safe our relative made. More details about it HERE

Here is a map of the room in case you are all turned around. In case of an emergency, please exit to your left. Got anything fun planned this weekend? We will be going to the San Diego Mission Art Walk this weekend. I'm so excited about it. Ive been trying to get there for two years now. I hope to find some awesome art to take home with me. Have a fun art packed weekend and thanks for stopping by!

DIY Jewelry Holder

As I wait for my nieces summer vacation visit, I thought I would stay busy and focus on making her room more enjoyable for her stay. She has a cute jewelry box, but her necklaces are always getting tangled. I decided to make a necklace holder for her. I wanted to DIY it and use what I had around the house.

I found some scrap molding I used to frame out my bathroom mirror. I only had a few hooks on hand. Not enough for this project so I kept looking. Then I found these wooden pieces I used for my door wreath project. Perfect!

I used wood glue to attach the wood pieces and sprayed the whole thing white. I also sprayed the screws so they would blend better. Then I got my favorite gold Sharpie paint pen out and went to town. I wanted a geometric design. It started out as some kind of cool arrow design but then evolved into feathers/leaves in the end. Not what I tried for but it fits the woodland theme.

It gets the job done!

So that's the latest addition in that room. I'm sure she will love the easy access and it evens out the purse hanging on the deer hook.

I hope everyone has a fun weekend!

Growing Garden Window

My computer came down with something last week and I think it gave it to me. But my sickness included itchy red hives all over my body. Not fun! That doesn't make for very good blogging. Being groggy on meds probably doesn't either but I wanted to share this small project I knocked out before we got sick.

This is the garden window in my kitchen. It was a big empty space that was only good for letting light in. I finally stopped procrastinating and had some glass cut for a shelf. I think three and a half years was long enough, don't you?

BEFORE
AFTER
I have a bottle collection I started after I inherited some of my grandmothers bottles. I tried displaying all of them but thought it looked busy. They were also really heavy and I was worried the glass would give. So I settled with these few.

My awesome husband surprised me with this tree monogrammed vase from Etsy a few years ago. I'm still in love with it!

If you are wondering whats in the shot glass, I heard that scallions will regrow if you stick them in water after they have been used. That is a fact. They are growing super fast. I haven't had to go to the store to buy more! Yay

I stacked some cook books and placed my hippo planter on top. They are much easier to get to than the cabinet above the refrigerator.

I like to take my rings off when I clean or do dishes. My mother told me a story that I will never forget. She set her wedding rings on the window seal and they went down the drain! My paranoia made me add this glass box so that NEVER happens to me. So scary! I DIYed this clay pot with paint, decorative paper, Mod Podge and twine.

I have my "Ma & Pa" out-house salt and pepper shakers on display. I just have a thing for small wooded items. They make me smile.

Here is a close up of my glass window hanger. My Aunt gave it to me and I want to say it was from our Hungary trip. My memory is failing me on these meds.

Here is one more after shot. It's so much more cheerful in my kitchen with this complete! Its the small things that make a room some times.

No Coats Allowed

My kitchen is small. The cabinets are small and it doesn't help that we knocked three cabinets out that were dividing the kitchen and the dinning room. But it is worth loosing the storage space because it feels so wonderfully open!

Most of my small kitchen appliances are too tall for my cabinets. I was stuffing them in the pantry but this made looking for food impossible. I had to find a solution. We have a coat closet right around the corner from the kitchen. Its actually on the other side of the kitchen wall. We live in Southern California so I knew we wouldn't miss this coat closet, being that we only wear a coat two months out of the year. After I moved the coats to our bedroom closet I was left with this worn out space in need of paint.

I taped my stripes and applied Valspar Hazy Stratus and Glidden Natural White. I tried to add a fun stencil but it was coming out blotchy, so I painted over it.

I reused the top shelf and purchased two pieces of MDF for the bottom shelves. I measured my tallest appliance and that gave me the correct spacing I needed.

I added molding across the front to give it a built in look. Filled the gaps with chalking and painted the shelves white.

Everything fits perfect! Its easy to locate and pull out the item I need. Its a much smarter use of the space for our home.

Have you guys built any shelves lately?  What about changing a space to accommodate something it wasn't intended for? I say, do whatever helps make your life easier! Have a wonderful weekend!

Thrifty Thursday

I stopped by the Goodwill on my way home yesterday. I wasn't looking for anything in particular, just looking. That's always when you find the best stuff! I found this fun cake plate. It makes me want to start baking. It would also look cute on the wall or used as a tray.

I found this...what ever it is. Haha, I don't really know but I thought it was cool. Its from Israel in case you didn't notice. It has some cool fish engraved onto the metal.

I think it goes awesome in my hallway frame collage. Fills that gap perfectly.

The last thing I found was this ceramic bowel. If you know me, you know I love me some homemade ceramics.

I will never stop loving thrift stores. You always come home with one of a kind items. Hang in there, its almost Friday! Ill be back tomorrow.
